Tesco announces plans to cut 400 jobs

Tesco has announced plans to cut 400 jobs as part of its ongoing efforts to streamline operations.

The supermarket giant stated that jobs would be affected at its bakeries, mobile phone shops, and head office in Welwyn Garden City, Hertfordshire.

To continue meeting customer needs, Tesco said: “We must constantly find ways to simplify our business. In recent years, this has allowed us to invest more in price, quality, and service.”

The store explained that the grocery market is more competitive than ever, and it must work hard to ensure it continues to offer customers unrivalled value.

“This means always being open to new, more efficient ways of working. With this in mind, we have started speaking to colleagues about a number of proposed changes in our stores and head office, including changes to our bakery model in some stores and updates to our management structure in Tesco Mobile phone shops. Taken together, these proposed changes will result in around 400 roles being removed.”

Tesco operates various stores across North Devon, including its superstores in Barnstaple, Braunton, Bideford, and Ilfracombe, as well as several Express stores and the Tesco Extra store at Barnstaple Taw View.

However, Tesco has made it clear that these cuts are to occur throughout the business and has not specified whether the North Devon locations will be impacted.

Matthew Barnes, CEO of Tesco UK, said: “These are difficult decisions affecting our colleagues, but we believe they are necessary to enable us to invest in what matters most to our customers. Our priority is to support impacted colleagues, and we will do everything we can to help them find alternative roles within our business. Today, we have almost 1,000 vacancies available.”

In a similar trend, Sainsbury’s announced last week (on January 23) that they have plans to cut over 3,000 jobs across the company, including the closure of all remaining 61 cafés.

Something that was described as “difficult” by Sainsbury’s.
